How Does Spinal Decompression Work?

By cycling through distraction and relaxation phases and by proper positioning, a spinal disc can be isolated and placed under negative pressure, causing a vacuum effect within it. The vacuum effect accomplishes two things. From a mechanical standpoint, disc material that has protruded or herniated outside the normal confines of the disc can be pulled back within the disc by the vacuum created within the disc. Also, the vacuum within the disc stimulates growth of blood supply, secondarily stimulating a healing response. This results in pain reduction and proper healing at the injured site.

 Cost is $50 per treatment

5 Ways to Enhance Your Spinal Decompression Treatment

Spinal decompression is a very effective method for stretching the spine out to relieve pressure from nerves, muscles, and other soft tissues. It also helps treat herniated discs and has been responsible for relieving many debilitating cases of sciatica.

As effective as it is, though, there are ways you can undo the results. Fortunately, there are also ways to enhance them. The following tips shared by Dr. Tanner and the team at Tanner Chiropractic & Acupuncture in Scottsdale, AZ can help you achieve and maintain the best possible results.

1. Attend All Treatment Sessions

Before diving into daily tips, there’s one important thing to understand. Full relief typically requires more than one visit. After your chiropractor recommends a specific number of treatments, be sure to complete them all.

2. Stay Hydrated

Your soft tissues need water. In fact, the muscles are almost entirely made up of water. When you are dehydrated, these soft tissues can’t do what they need to do. And dehydration can cause your spinal discs to lose the water they need to stay plump and provide cushioning. It’s essential that you make staying hydrated a priority.

3. Eat Well

Maintaining a healthy weight is critical for spinal health, but eating well goes beyond managing your weight. Eating healthy foods ensures that your muscles, discs, bones, and other critical components get the vitamins and nutrients they need. While you don’t necessarily have to follow a strict diet, being wise in your food choices can greatly improve the results of your spinal decompression treatments.

4. Stretch and Exercise

Stretching can help keep undue tension from the spinal column, which can prevent additional misalignment and herniated discs. Exercising not only strengthens your core to help keep your spine stabilized but also helps move the water you drink throughout the body. This helps ensure that your discs and other soft tissues get the water they need.

5. Take Care in Your Daily Life

One of the fastest ways to undo the stretch of spinal decompression is to be careless in how you sit, stand, and lift. Maintaining a healthy spine requires that you practice proper posture and that you use proper lifting techniques.
